Come and learn what the AAPI community is doing to uncover the stories of the Chinese community that helped shape Petaluma between the 1860s and 1890s.
Between the 1860s and 1890s, Petaluma was home to a thriving community of Chinese laborers who lived and worked as brick-makers, river dredgers, levee and railroad workers, agricultural laborers, house servants, and more.
The McNear family, one of the wealthiest families who owned the riverfront peninsula property at the time, employed a large number of Chinese workers. By the 1900s, most residents of Chinese descent were driven out of Petaluma by racist scapegoating and widespread Anti-Chinese movement.
Learn what the AAPI community is doing to shed light on stories that are hidden in plain sight in Petaluma. This is a very exciting project. Please come and find out how you can get involved in the research and future event planning.
